Wolf's Head & Vixen Morris

 

Wolf's Head and Vixen were launched in 1993 and 1994, respectively. Both rose from the ashes of an "ancestor" Morris side, Long Barrow & the Lost Women - the first "Gothic" Morris side - that had folded a year or so before the formation of Wolf's Head by some former members of Long Barrow.

The all-black kit and many dances were retained from Long Barrow & the Lost Women. But Wolf's Head and Vixen grew from other influences too, including even the 1980s TV series Robin of Sherwood! "Wolf's head" was a mediaeval term used to denote an outlaw.

From the beginning, the intention was to create more than merely a group of people Morris dancing together as a hobby. We wanted to form a kind of haven or community for people who didn't necessarily fit in easily with the rest of the "normal" world. Hopefully we've achieved that. It's certainly led to Wolf's Head and Vixen encountering some interesting characters along the way!

We've danced more or less the length and breadth of England, over the years; from Sandwich to Boscastle, and from Whitby to the Isle of Wight. But our home is, and always will be, Kent (rooted especially in the Medway/Maidstone area); influenced by Kent's unique, often rebellious, traditions and folklore.

At the time of writing, we've been dancing for over thirty years. Here's looking forward to at least the next thirty...
